“Conversations between Earth and Sky”
I am awed by the beauty of the simple terrain, solitary trees, abandoned homesteads, and expansive sky of the high plains. These landscapes are my observations of the “conversations between earth and sky”. I take hundreds of photographs as I travel and then work to translate these in my studio with oil, pastel and watercolor media.
“Sky Works” – I've been inspired by the vast overarching sky of the prairie, reflections in water, awesome storm clouds, and the beautiful color spectrum of sunsets.
"Prairie Landscapes” – Solitary trees of the prairies seem like dancing ladies. Old cottonwoods brace for wind and cold. The colors and textures of grasses and crops, give life to the flatland and gently rolling hills of the prairie.
“Woodland and Grassland” – Open grasslands look like a large animal, with fur over sleeping backs. The sheltered canyons and trails of the Black Hills offer a spiritual landscape.
“Homestead” – The abandoned Payne Homestead, near Java, South Dakota, was the inspiration for over 30 works in the last ten years.
"Collected Paintings" - A representative sampling of paintings and pastels now in public and private collections.
